What does an ethanol fireplace bring to a living space?

Any living space can include an open fireplace design now that ethanol fireplaces are widely available and accepted as an effective source of heat. Whether you are building, renovating or renting, you can introduce an open flame appliance at any time.

Why is it sustainable?

During combustion, the emissions from bioethanol produce heat, steam and a small amount of carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is then absorbed by plants and processed by photosynthesis to help the plant grow. This process makes bioethanol a carbon-neutral fuel source.

Why use bioethanol?

Bioethanol, a renewable energy, is the cleanest and most efficient fuel on the market, which means there are no emissions and no soot or ash to clean up.

Is Bioethanol easily obtainable?

Yes, you can have fuel delivered to public and private premises in many countries.

What are some key benefits – compared to other heating options?

When you choose ethanol as your fuel source over gas or wood, you are totally simplifying your installation requirements and costs. There's no flue or chimney required when burning ethanol, which means that you have the ultimate in design flexibility to achieve an open fire in so many more areas of your home - both indoors and out.

What are the benefits of this type of heating?

Environmental credentials: Bioethanol (methylated spirits) is a compelling alternative to fossil fuelled fires; it’s both environmentally friendly and energy efficient, without the harmful greenhouse gas emissions associated with gas or wood fires. Bioethanol is a renewable energy which burns clean and has a minimal carbon footprint.

Aesthetics: Bioethanol fires such as EcoSmart Fires look stunning – and create a design statement in many outdoor environments. In addition, burning bioethanol creates a beautiful, lively dancing flame that is simply mesmerising.

Versatility: The fact that bioethanol fires such as EcoSmart don’t have a flue or require any type of utility connection means they are portable and can be easily placed and moved to different parts of indoor and outdoor living spaces.

EcoSmart Fires are also hugely popular because they can be used for myriad purposes:

They can easily and effectively illuminate gardens, courtyard, pools and other alfresco areas. These fires provide a soft, alluring glow – without any connections.

They can cleverly highlight a water feature (either incorporated into the design of a water feature or alongside it)

They can create a stunning focal point when used as a key design feature – or the main focal point of a garden. They can also create cosy entertaining spaces that can be utilised year round.

What is a bioethanol fireplace?

A Bioethanol fireplace is an open fireplace that is fueled by bioethanol. A real flame is produced by the lighting of bioethanol, with a by-product being heat in the process. It is a fireplace that needs no flue for exhausting emissions, no utilities such as electricity or gas connection, and it uses a sustainable fuel source.

Do bioethanol fireplaces produce heat?

Yes, although it does depend upon the size of the fireplace and also the size of the room itself. But a fire of an appropriate size can produce a good level of heat when considered properly in terms of its actual output and how it is positioned in the space. Bioethanol fires are a secondary source of heat that deliver a myriad of lifestyle benefits that can’t be achieved from primary heat sources such as radiators or reverse cycle air conditioning.

Is their heat output similar to a gas heater?

Burning bioethanol is similar to gas, but the room doesn't dry out like it does with gas - a more gentle, softer heat is created. Heat-wise, it depends on the models being compared. Some of our bioethanol burners output 15,000 BTU and can heat up to 60sqm of living space. Bioethanol is not, however, on an adjustable thermostat. Some may be turned up and down, but you can't control the room temperature in the same way as you do with gas on mains

How is bioethanol made?

Bioethanol, or simply ethanol, is a renewable energy source made by fermenting sugars and starch components of plant by-products (mainly sugarcane and crops like grain) using yeast. It is also made from corn, potatoes, milk, rice, beetroot and, more recently, grapes.

Do I need a Chimney, vent or flue?

You can install a bioethanol fireplace without a chimney or flue, because ethanol-fuelled appliances burn clean and do not contribute particulates or emissions to the indoor environment, unlike other fuel source appliances. They do not generate smoke, ash, soot or residue and ethanol fires burn odourless. The only combustion product is carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapour in the same amounts as we exhale.

Can I use my existing fireplace even though the flue is blocked off?

Yes, with a bioethanol burner, you are able to bring back a real flame into your existing fireplace with no flue required. Bioethanol is a clean-burning fuel.

How do I clean my ethanol fireplace?

Bioethanol fireplaces are practically maintenance-free. Because the fuel burns clean, no cleaning is needed before or after use. Occasionally, you may need to clean any residues near the burner opening. This is due to dust or impurities in the air that got burned during operation. Mild soap and water or a stainless steel cleaner can be used to wipe off any residue.

EcoSmart Fires can be washed in hot water and some models can even be put in the dishwasher, enabling you to effortlessly remove dust, carbon residue, and denaturing agents found in the fuel.

How safe is a bioethanol fuel?

Bioethanol is a very stable fuel source that when used in a bioethanol fireplace, combusts very evenly with no embers, soot, smoke or ash. It is completely contained within the burner unit so it cannot escape or be unpredictable in the combustion process - unlike, for instance, timber, which can be inconsistent with combustion or can even move in the fireplace setting, thus requiring guards and a hearth.

Do bioethanol fireplaces leave condensation during the burn process?

The moisture or water vapour created in the burning of the fuel is minimal and thus only adds to the air and not condensate on hard surfaces such as walls or glass/windows.

Are bioethanol fireplaces refilled?

EcoSmart Fires are easily filled with a proprietary safety jerry can, which features a special dispensing nozzle designed to use in dedicated filling points, which means it’s clean, safe and fast to refill and re-light to enjoy.

How can I reduce my carbon footprint?

Bio-friendly renewable fuel source - bioethanol - is used for bioethanol fires. This eliminates the release of by-products that create greenhouse emissions.

How popular are bioethanol fires?

Bioethanol fires are a well established category in the world of heating. They continue to grow in popularity around the world for both residential and commercial premises. For apartments and homes where gas isn’t an option, bioethanol fires are a fairly standard appliance. What was once viewed as an unusual feature is now a standard inclusion in many homes and commercial premises.

What is bioethanol fuel?

Bioethanol (also known as methylated spirits or simply ethanol) is a form of renewable energy. It’s a clear, colourless liquid that’s commonly made from fermenting the sugar and starch components of plant by-products like sugarcane and grain crops.

Where do I get bioethanol?
