Using Alcohol as a disinfectant
According to the Center for Disease and Control, alcohol-based products (i.e., ethanol and isopropyl alcohol) can be used for sanitization purposes relating to COVID-19 . The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identifies ethanol as an active ingredient in products for use against COVID-19.
WARNING: Please note that many household cleaning products including those with an alcohol base are flammable and should be kept away from all sources of ignition.
CDC and FDA Recommendations on Hand Sanitizers
The CDC’s guidance indicates that for hand sanitization, alcohol-based products must have at least 60% ethanol or 70% isopropyl alcohol in order to be effective against COVID-19. However, the FDA doesn’t recommend that consumers make their own hand sanitizer. If made incorrectly, hand sanitizer can be ineffective – or worse.
